Knowing that you need to focus on long-tail keywords is important, but you also need to know about search volume and competition.  Ideally, you will want to target keywords that have a high search volume with low competition.  Unfortunately, this can be very hard to find, but you do need to find the right combination of search volume and competition.

Have High-Quality Content

The content that you have on your website will play a large role in the success of your SEO strategy.  Poor content will result in poor rankings because you are not providing value to the search engine user.  High-quality content will rank better and will be more likely to be shared on social media which increases your visibility.

Long form content is becoming more popular and you should consider this.  This content will be between 750 and 1000 words in length.  This length is viewed by the search engines as long enough for you to provide quality information to the visitor.

When writing your content, you need to break it up using sub-headings.  Most people will skim content to find the information that they need instead of reading the whole article.  Having clear sub-headings will help the reader find what they are looking for and will help the search engines determine what your content is about.

You also need to ensure that you write for a human audience.  In the early days of SEO, many people would write content targeting the search engine bots.  This would result in high rankings, but the content was unintelligible to humans which hurt the search engines.  This has led to a change in search algorithms and writing for the bots will no longer land you on the first page of the results.

Get High-Quality Links

Backlinks are something that you need to focus on with SEO.  These are links that lead from another website back to your own.  When getting backlinks you need to focus on quality instead of quality.

This is another part of SEO that has changed over the years because of bad practices that manipulated the system.  In the past, people would buy backlinks which improved their rankings.  This was due to the fact that the number of backlinks counted more than the source of the backlinks.

This has changed and the source will play a larger role in the impact the link has on your ranking.  If you get a backlink from a website that is considered an authority, it will count more than dozens of low-quality links.
